Call or email Senator Limon and Assemblyman Hart to protect CO2 pipeline ban

California currently has a moratorium on building new CO2 pipelines until the federal government releases a long-awaited rule on CO2 pipeline safety. After that, California can create its own stricter regulations. BUT the legislature is currently considering ending the protective ban now. That’s a very bad idea. When they leak or blow out CO2 pipelines are dangerous to public health and wildlife. In 2020 a pipeline burst near Satartia, Mississippi, population 50. Two hundred people had to be evacuated from the surrounding areas, and 45 people required medical attention.
As usual, it’s our old friend the fossil fuel industry working against the public good. The industry has been lobbying the legislature to end protections, so they can forge ahead with the expansion of carbon capture and storage projects across the state. These projects are dangerous and expensive distractions from climate solutions we know work!
